Welcome to First Grade- Overview
First grade is when the pieces start working together: letters, sounds, writing, spelling, and short books.
If kindergarten skills still feel shaky, stay there a little longer. Use this toolbox when your child knows most letter names and sounds and can begin to sound out simple words.
This year is not a race through readers. It is a short daily routine and enough practice that reading starts to feel smoother.
Second grade is different. That year goes sideways: more practice, more confidence, the same skills becoming automatic. First grade is for getting those skills working.
Where do I begin?
Start with #1 and keep that short drill going, even after books begin.
Do the daily phonics routine first.
Then add writing.
Books come after the sounds are being used, not instead of them.
