Hear & Identify Beginning Sounds

Once your child knows a few letter sounds, the next step is hearing that sound in words.

This week: make the puppet → do that letter’s sound page.

How a page works

  1. Look at the picture.

  2. Say this- “Does this start like Alligator Ann?”

  3. If yes, color it. If no, cross it out.

Example: a picture of a hat
“h-h-h. Does that begin like aaa Alligator Ann?”

No? cross it out

This is what it looks like when you are done.

More Sound Worksheets

After creating your sound puppet for the week, choose the phonic page for the same sound.

The goal is to help your child begin to recognize words with the same sound .

Same order as the Letter Friends

These pages are designed to work with the Letter Puppets as a weekly sound activity.

  • Unit 1: A, B, C, K

  • Unit 2: D, E, F, G

  • Unit 3: H, M, N, T, S, Z

  • Unit 4: O, P, R, W

  • Unit 5: I, J, Q, L

  • Unit 6: U, V, Y

Look at each picture, decide whether the picture begins with the same sound as the focus sound.

  • Let your child decide.

  • Practice makes hearing the sound easier

  • The talking is the lesson.
