Daily Phonics Routine

Kids feel successful when the same few familiar things happen every day.

This routine stays small on purpose: letters, vowels, the sound friends you already know, then one or two quick pages from the phonic flip chart.

The daily routine order

1. Say the ABCs
Sing them and then say the alphabet together. Same way every day.

2. Name the vowels
Say:
a, e, i, o, u, and sometimes y. These are the vowels. These are the vowels. Everything else is a consonant.

3. Say the letter sounds for the Letter Friends you already have made
Hold up the puppets you have finished. They do not need to be in ABC order yet.

Ask:

  • Who is this?

  • What do they say?

If the child is unsure, you say the name and the sound, then let them echo or say it together.

When all the friends are made:
Put them in ABC order and keep practicing the same way.

A simple trick:
Mount the puppets you make on the wall as the set you can see every day. Use the ones your child makes as the “hold up” puppets for the game.

4. Phonics flip charts
Start with the color words. Add the next chart only when the current one feels easy. A little each day is enough.

Next:

New friend this week → then that letter’s sound page.

  • Make the puppet

  • Do the matching beginning-sound page

Tomorrow: ( during this time)

  • Practice writing the new letter of the week

Other things you might do during this time:

  • Work on Color Word Booklets
